'Tis the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone.

-   Thomas Moore, The Last Rose of Summer, 1830

AGATHA'S FEATHERBED

Not just another wild goose story

Signs of Fall

The chickadees have returned

A little early this year

The Blue Jays are stocking up

For a long cold winter here

Frost has nipped at the leaves

Turning them orange and red

Flower pods face the ground

And put their seeds to bed

Behind the house, in the marsh

At barely the slightest sound

The geese will honk a warning

While fleeing from the ground

The days are getting shorter

The mornings are quite cold

The sign say winter’s coming

So prepare and behold
